A Book That Stayed with Me

Title: The Healing Power of Storytelling: Using Personal Narrative to Navigate Illness, Trauma, and Loss

Author: Annie Brewster

Recently, I read the book The Healing Power of Storytelling by Annie Brewster. The book explores the ways storytelling can help people process illness, loss, trauma, and identity through difficult experiences.

As both a therapist and someone who has navigated many of these experiences personally, I have come to truly understand how important stories are in the healing journey.

In my own Native culture, stories hold deep importance and have been used for generations to pass down knowledge, traditions, and healing from past trauma.

As a therapist working within the Native community, I have had the privilege of helping clients share some of their most difficult stories in ways that allow them to feel heard, understood, and empowered.

This book reinforced how meaningful that process truly is. Sometimes, healing can begin simply by sharing your story with even one person.

People want to feel seen and understood—even when others may not fully relate to their experiences.

In my own life, I kept many of my medical experiences and concerns hidden from friends and peers while growing up.

It wasn’t until I began my journey toward becoming a therapist that I fully understood how important my story could be—not only for others, but for my own healing as well.

Each time I share pieces of my story, it feels like I carry a little less weight on my shoulders.

I’ve learned that stories create connection, both in therapy and in our personal lives.

The purpose of this blog is to create a space where I can share parts of my own story and hopefully offer something meaningful to others through that process.

As time goes on, I hope this also becomes a space where others feel safe enough to share their own stories and begin healing in their own ways.

Healing isn’t always about “fixing” something.
Sometimes it’s about finally having the space to tell your story.
